STEPS TO MAKE A Silicone Mold - Using Household Items

This is a step-by-step tutorial of how to produce a silicone mold. The items used are all household products.

Step 1 1 Place the sculpture on a bed of clay. The clay needs to cover ½ of the sculpture. If this were a plaster mold, the midline where the clay goes up to needs to be along the highest points with no undercuts. This is the surface you will make the first half of your mold on.

Step 2 2 Smooth the surface of the clay with a wet brush, then put four 1/4 " round 1" long pieces of clay on the bed to act as keys for the silicone. Put a piece of clay on the top of the sculpture to act as a pour spout ( Sometimes the pour opening will be along the seam line. In that case, be sure to leave it open, never cover the pour hole)

Step 3 Put a thin layer of Vaseline on the clay bed and sculpture.

Step 4 4 (Read and follow warning labels on all chemicals ) Mix 1/3 cup of silicone with 2 tbsp of rubber cement together in a bowl. Should have the texture of peanut butter.

Step 5 Spread the silicone on the clay bed and sculpture. Do not cover the top of the pour hole.

Step 6 Press 1 ½ square pieces of drywall mesh into the silicone. Notice that we didn't cover the pour hole.

Stage 7 Cover the mesh with a thin coating of you silicone mixture.

Step 8 Cover dry silicone with layer of Vaseline. Then mix plaster into a bowl with water, it should feel like pudding when correctly mixed. Then put a thin layer of mixed plaster on the Vaseline coated surface of silicone ( do not cover pour hole).

Step 9 Proceed to dip 3x 2 pieces of burlap in mixed plaster and place them on the plaster layer from previous step. Do not cover pour hole. While the plaster is still wet, lightly spray the surface of the burlap with h2o and smooth out the surface.

Step 10 Cut the clay bed clear of your work surface with something razor-sharp ( by no means cut towards yourself). Start the mold and remove clay bed from sculpture. The clay within the key slots must be removed aswell. Clean any leftover clay bits off.

Step 11 Cover 1st fifty percent of the mold and sculpture with Vaseline ( do not forget to place Vaseline in the keys). Repeat the whole process on this side now.
